Gebiete Griechenlands

What it is like
- Mountainous and far emptier than its position next to Athens suggests.
- The Mani in the south is bare rock, stone tower villages and a coast road with almost nothing on it.
Where to go
- The Mani peninsula and its tower villages
- Monemvasia, a town inside a rock in the sea
For the vehicle
- The Moreas motorway crosses it with barrier tolls. Category 3 applies over 2.20 m, and the parallel old roads are free and better looking.
- More campsites than anywhere else on the mainland, and several stay open into October.

What it is like
- Meteora is six working monasteries on top of vertical rock pillars, and the road between them is the attraction on its own.
- Delphi is built into a mountainside with a view down a valley of olive trees to the sea.
Where to go
- Meteora, from Kalambaka
- Delphi and the drive down to Galaxidi
For the vehicle
- The A1 through here is barrier tolled by several operators. A car paid 36.70 euros Athens to Thessaloniki in 2026 and a tall van pays category 3 at every barrier.
- Monastery car parks at Meteora are small and fill by mid morning. Arrive early or park in Kalambaka.

What it is like
- Grey stone and slate rather than whitewash. It looks nothing like the Greece on the postcards.
- Walking country: the Vikos gorge, the Dragon lakes, and paths between villages that were the roads until recently.
Where to go
- The Vikos gorge and the Papingo villages
- Ioannina and its island in the lake
For the vehicle
- Village roads are single track with stone walls. A long motorhome is the wrong vehicle for several of them.
- Most of Zagori is national park and Natura 2000, where the camping prohibition is enforced. Use the campsites down on the coast at Parga and Preveza.
