What it is like
- Warm and shallow. Siófok averages 28 °C in July and August and the water follows the air.
- Wall to wall in high season, and half shuttered by mid October. The shoulder months are the ones worth the drive.
Where to go
- Tihany, the peninsula with the abbey and the lavender
- Badacsony and the volcanic wine hills above the north shore
For the vehicle
- This is the part of Hungary most likely to have a municipal rule about large vehicles overnight. Read the sign in the car park rather than assuming.
- Campsites are dense here and are the practical answer in high season. Book rather than hope in July and August.

What it is like
- Hilly by Hungarian standards, forested, and busy at weekends because it is Budapest's day out.
- Budapest averages a daily high of 28 °C in July, and the city is hard work in a van in high summer.
Where to go
- Esztergom and the largest basilica in the country
- Visegrád citadel for the view down the bend
For the vehicle
- Do not drive a van into central Budapest. Park on the edge, on a metro or HÉV line, and ride in.
- Budapest runs restricted freight zones signed by weight and administered through a permit system. Read the sign at the boundary if you are over 3.5 tonnes.

What it is like
- Flat, dry and enormous. Debrecen is the driest of the five stations on this page and the hottest in August.
- There is no shade. A van parked on the puszta in July is an oven by eleven in the morning.
Where to go
- Hortobágy and the nine arched bridge
- Debrecen, the second city and the gateway to the region
For the vehicle
- Much of the Hortobágy is protected and parts are strictly protected, where entering at all needs a permit except on marked trails.
- Driving off the road network on a protected area needs a permit from the nature protection authority, and the fine for doing it without one runs to 100,000 forint.
