Safety and health

Bulgaria is a safe country for van travel and the real risks are practical rather than criminal. Violent crime against visitors is rare and rural Bulgaria is the sort of place where nothing happens to a parked vehicle overnight. What goes wrong is concentrated in the coastal resorts in July and August, where opportunistic theft and overcharging follow the crowds, and on the roads, where the driving is faster and less patient than the speed limits suggest.

What works

  • Arrive before dark so you can see the place you picked and read the signs on it.
  • Nothing visible through the windows. No bags, no laptop on the table.

Health, mountains and dogs

  • 112 reaches everything, and it is now also the route to mountain rescue.
  • Mountain rescue direct lines: 02 963 2000, 0887 100 237 and 0887 100 238. The short number 1470 was closed in August 2026.

The biggest genuine risk to a van traveller here is the road itself. Bulgaria allows 140 km/h on a motorway for a category B vehicle, overtaking on two lane roads is assertive, and a heavy motorhome is capped at 80 outside towns while everything around it is not. Drive the mountain roads by the hour rather than by the kilometre, and use the lay-bys to let traffic past rather than holding a queue behind you.
