You do not need a green card here, and you do need to be insured. EU member states stopped checking insurance on Bosnian vehicles on 19 October 2020, and the arrangement runs both ways, so an EU registration plate is treated as its own proof of cover. What is separate is whether your own policy lists the country: the Border Police can ask for printed proof, and border insurance is sold at nine named crossings if you cannot show it.

Insurance and paperwork

  • No green card is required. The EU removed insurance checks on Bosnian vehicles from 19 October 2020, and the multilateral agreement works in both directions.
  • Check your own policy covers the country anyway. That is a different question from the border check, and the Border Police can ask for printed proof.

Winter, weather and accidents

  • From November to April your tyres must be marked MS, M+S or M&S with the snowflake symbol, with at least 4 mm of tread, and you must carry snow chains and use them when signed.
  • Conditions outside the main towns can worsen quickly in winter. This is a mountain country and the passes behave like it.

Diesel was 3.51 KM a litre on 14 September 2026, about 1.79 euros, which is the cheapest of the four countries in this corner of the Balkans. There is no vignette, no environmental sticker and no urban access charge. The A1 tariff above is the Federation's. Republika Srpska runs its own motorway network and sets its own prices.
