Food and shops

Sunday is the thing to plan for. Since a 2023 amendment to the trade law, a Croatian shop may open on only 16 Sundays in the calendar year, and each retailer chooses its own. There is no national rota, so two supermarkets on the same street can have opposite answers on the same day. Petrol station shops, bakeries, kiosks and shops inside ferry, bus and rail terminals are exempt and trade every Sunday.

Where to shop

  • Best value: Lidl or Plodine.
  • Full range: Konzum or INTERSPAR.
  • Camper access: Use retail-park Lidl, Plodine or INTERSPAR branches away from old centres.

Eating out without getting it wrong

  • The weekday lunch deal is the value meal. A gablec or marenda is 6 to 12 euros and served roughly 12:00 to 15:00, often only until the pot is empty.
  • Fish is priced by the kilogram. Ask what the whole fish weighs and what it will cost before it is cooked.

Stocking the campervan

  • Buy olive oil, wine, pršut and dried figs here. The island olive oils are worth the shelf space.
  • Shop on Saturday. Assume Sunday is closed unless you have checked that specific shop.
