Hungary by campervan

Hungarian traffic law says nothing about sleeping, so where a vehicle may lawfully stand you may lawfully sleep in it. Camping is a separate question: in a forest it needs the forest manager's consent, and on a protected natural area even driving needs a permit. Everything else before the border: the forint rather than the euro, the e-vignette and the category that catches motorhomes, the thermal baths, and why the Balaton in August is a different country from the Balaton in May.

Basics

Basics

Hungary is in the EU and in Schengen but not in the eurozone, so the money in your hand is the forint and not the euro. That is the first thing to fix and the language is the second. Hungarian is not related to German, Slovak, Croatian, Romanian or anything else on its borders, so none of the guesses that work elsewhere in central Europe work here, and nobody expects you to try.

Budapest. Park outside the centre and ride the tram in, it is quicker anyway

The Hungarian day

  • Breakfast is small and early. Bakeries open by six and a pékség is on every second corner.
  • Lunch, roughly 11:30 to 14:00. The main hot meal, and when the fixed price napi menü is served.

Power, water and getting online

  • 230V, 50Hz, type F sockets. The same round earthed socket as Germany and Austria, so a standard European plug goes straight in. UK and Irish plugs need an adapter.
  • Tap water is safe across the country. Ask for csapvíz. Some restaurants will only sell you bottled, which is normal rather than rude.

Thermal baths: 2026 adult day tickets at three of them

BathPriceWhat you get
Széchenyi, Budapest13,200 Ft Monday to Thursday, 14,800 Ft Friday to SundayThe big one. Outdoor pools in a neo-baroque courtyard, open year round, and busy every day of it
Hévíz7,500 Ft for a day, 4,500 Ft for three hoursA thermal lake rather than a pool, warm enough to swim in outdoors in winter. Half an hour from the west end of the Balaton
Hungarospa, Hajdúszoboszló5,500 Ft off season, 6,000 Ft weekdays and 6,500 Ft weekends from 15 June to 31 AugustThe eastern spa town. Brown medicinal water, a huge complex, and the cheapest of the three

Every bath price above is from the operator's own 2026 price list, read on 18 September 2026. Widen the search and the range goes wider still: almost every county town has a municipal gyógyfürdő or strandfürdő that costs less than any of these, and several of them have a campsite attached to the same site. For a van traveller that combination is the single most useful thing about the country.

Hungary moves working days to build long weekends, and a ministerial decree does it a year ahead. For 2026, that decree makes Saturday 10 January a working day in exchange for Friday 2 January off, Saturday 8 August a working day in exchange for Friday 21 August off, and Saturday 12 December a working day in exchange for Thursday 24 December off. The August one matters most: 20 August is a Thursday, so 20 to 23 August 2026 is a four day national weekend and the Balaton will be at its absolute fullest.

Common questions about Hungary by campervan

Can you sleep in a campervan in Hungary?

Yes. Hungarian law does not regulate sleeping in a vehicle at all. The KRESZ, the road traffic rules, regulates where a vehicle may stop and stand, so wherever your vehicle may lawfully stand you may lawfully sleep inside it. What is regulated separately is camping, which in a forest needs the forest manager's consent and on a protected natural area runs into a permit requirement for driving there at all.

Is wild camping legal in Hungary?

There is no blanket national ban, but two rules cover most of the places people want to camp. In a forest, staying more than 24 hours for recreation, camping and pitching a tent are lawful only with the forest manager's consent, under the forest act. On a protected natural area, driving a vehicle needs a permit from the nature protection authority under the nature conservation act. Everywhere else, all land has an owner whose permission you need and municipalities can restrict it locally.

What is the fine for wild camping in Hungary?

Camping in a forest without the forest manager's consent carries a forest protection fine of 0.2 to 5.0 times the forest levy base per occasion, under a government decree. The forest act fixes that base at 100,000 forint, so the band is 20,000 to 500,000 forint. Driving a vehicle on a protected natural area without a permit carries a base nature protection fine of up to 100,000 forint under a government decree, doubled on a strictly protected area. These are statutory bands rather than what is typically imposed.

What currency does Hungary use?

The Hungarian forint, written Ft and coded HUF. Hungary is in the European Union and in Schengen but has not adopted the euro. On 18 September 2026 the Hungarian National Bank official rate was 363.47 forint to the euro, 316.53 to the US dollar and 423.23 to the pound. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and when a terminal offers to charge you in your own currency you should decline and pay in forint.
