Hungary is landlocked, flat and continental, so it gets a hot summer, a cold winter and a short shoulder either side. There is no sea to moderate anything and nothing in the country that counts as a mountain. May, June and September are the best months for a van. July and August are hot, and they are also when the entire country takes its holiday at the same lake, which matters more than the temperature does.

The year by region: how it feels, how warm, how wet
BestWorkableToo hotCold or wetTop figure: average daily high. Below it: average rainfall for the month.
Every figure in the strip is a 1991 to 2020 mean daily maximum and a monthly rainfall total for the station named in the row, published by the Hungarian Meteorological Service. Two rows need reading with care. Miskolc is a valley station and the Bükk and Zemplén ridges above it run several degrees cooler, which is the whole point of going up there in August. Siófok is on the water, so it reads milder than the villages a few kilometres inland on either shore.
The strip does not show crowding, and in Hungary crowding is the seasonal variable that will change your trip. The Balaton shore between late June and the third week of August is full, and 20 to 23 August 2026 is a four day national weekend on top of that. Everything the strip colours as hot is also, on that shore, the part of the year when a van needs a booked pitch rather than a hopeful one.
