Hungary's motorway vignette is fully digital, tied to the number plate, and sold either for the whole country or for one county at a time. There is nothing to stick on a windscreen. You buy an e-matrica online, at a petrol station or through the operator's app, and cameras read the plate. For a car or a motorhome in category D1 the prices valid from 1 January 2026 are 5,550 forint for a day, 6,900 for ten days, 11,170 for a month and 61,760 for the year.

Which category is your motorhome

  • Read three fields on the registration document and nothing else. J is the vehicle category, F.1 is the maximum authorised mass, S.1 is the number of seats including the driver.
  • D1 needs J to read M1 or M1G, F.1 to be at most 3,500 kg and S.1 to be at most 7. All three, not any of them.

Trailers, caravans and towing

  • A caravan towed by a D1 vehicle needs no vignette of its own. The D1 vignette on the car covers it.
  • A caravan towed by a D2 vehicle needs its own category U vignette on top of the D2 one. Two vignettes, not one.

The county vignette, and why a visitor should ignore it

  • A county vignette covers only the tolled expressway sections inside that one county, listed road by road in the annex to the decree that sets the prices.
  • A cross country drive needs several. Budapest to Keszthely on the M7 and M76 runs through the Pest, Fejér and Somogy sections, so that is three county vignettes.

Enforcement, and what it costs to get it wrong

  • The surcharge for using a tolled road without authorisation is 27,790 forint if paid within 60 days and 95,730 forint after that, on the rates valid from 1 January 2026.
  • Buying the wrong category is its own penalty. A vehicle carrying a lower category than it should is charged a differential surcharge of 15,530 forint within 60 days, 49,190 after. Carrying a higher category than needed costs nothing.

Low emission zones and city access

  • Published sources did not show a low emission zone of the western European kind operating against foreign vans anywhere in Hungary as of September 2026.
  • Budapest does run restricted and protected zones for freight traffic, signed by weight and administered through the TOBI permit system operated by Budapest Közút.

Fuel, lights and the rules that differ

  • Daytime lights are required outside built up areas only. The KRESZ obliges dipped headlights or daytime running lights by day on roads outside towns. Motorcycles must show them everywhere.
  • A reflective vest is required of anyone standing on the carriageway, hard shoulder or verge outside a town at night or in poor visibility, under the KRESZ.

There is no permitted blood alcohol level for a driver in Hungary. The KRESZ requires that a driver's body contain no alcohol from drinking, rather than less than some limit. In a country where lunch comes with wine and the evening comes with pálinka, that matters most the next morning. Moving the van 200 metres to a better spot is still driving.
