Sleeping

Sleeping

Italian law protects overnight parking by name. The Codice della Strada says the sosta of a motorhome, where parking is permitted, does not constitute camping if three things hold: the vehicle rests on the ground only through its wheels, it lets out nothing beyond the engine's exhaust, and it takes up no more road than the vehicle itself. Meet all three and you are parked, with the same standing as any car.

Still sosta, parked

  • Sleeping, cooking and eating inside
  • Roof vent and windows open, blinds down
  • Resting on the ground only through the wheels, engine off
  • Taking up no more road than the vehicle itself

Now campeggio, camping

  • Chairs, a table or a mat outside
  • Awning or veranda rolled out
  • Stabiliser legs or supports lowered onto the ground
  • Grey or black water let out on the ground
  • Anything that makes the vehicle occupy more road than it does closed

Where to sleep, cheapest first

Water, waste and showers

  • Fill and empty at an area di sosta. Most will let you use the service point for a couple of euros without staying the night, and many motorway services have one too.
  • Never empty grey water on the ground. It is the one thing the road code makes a national offence in its own right, at 87 to 344 euros, and it is the behaviour that gets camper parking banned in a town.

Who decides

  • The state sets the parking framework through the road code. That is the part that says parking is not camping.
  • The regions legislate on camping and open-air accommodation, which is why free camping is banned outright in Sardinia and handled case by case elsewhere.

What the fines run to

  • Blue-line parking with no ticket€41
  • Free camping in Sardinia, doubled on a repeat€100 to €250
  • Emptying waste outside a disposal point€87 to €344

The coast and the protected areas are where this gets strict. Beach ordinances, the ordinanze balneari, are issued town by town every season and almost all of them ban sleeping on the sand and overnight parking on the beachfront. National and regional parks add their own rules. The ranges above are what the national and regional laws state. Municipal ordinances differ and carry their own amounts.
