Weather
Italy is three climates stacked on top of each other, and the right month depends entirely on how far down the boot you are going. The Alps and the Dolomites are a June to September destination and snowbound either side. The centre and the north are at their best in spring and autumn and unpleasant in a van in July and August. Sicily and the far south are the only places with a real winter season.

The year by region: how it feels, how warm, how wet

Bolzano sits at 262 metres in a valley floor, so its figures are the mildest reading the Alps have to offer. The passes and the plateaux above it are ten to fifteen degrees colder and hold snow for months longer. Treat that row as the bottom of the mountains, not the mountains.
