Turkey by campervan

Two things decide whether a campervan trip to Turkey goes well. Your green card only covers Turkey if the TR box on it has not been crossed out, and the vehicle is recorded against you on entry, so it has to leave the country with you or the fines start. Everything else, from the HGS toll sticker to where you can legally spend the night, is easier than it looks once you know the shape of it.

Basics

Most of Turkey is in Asia, and this guide covers all of it, because somebody crossing at Kapıkule in a van is heading for Cappadocia, not stopping in Edirne. That one sentence is the only geography lesson here, but it has a practical edge: the country is about 1,600 km wide, and Ankara to Kars is two long days of driving, not one.

What you need in the glovebox

  • Passport, valid for 60 days beyond the end of your stay. That is what the immigration law asks for, and it is checked.
  • The vehicle registration document in your own name, at your own address. Turkish customs will not admit a vehicle registered to somebody else without a notarised power of attorney.

Power, water and getting online

  • 230V, 50Hz, type F sockets. The same round two-pin plug as Germany or France. UK and Irish plugs need an adapter.
  • A Turkish SIM is worth buying. Turkey is outside the EU roaming area, so an EU plan that costs nothing in Greece bills by the megabyte here.

The two religious holidays move about eleven days earlier each year, which is why no dates are given for them here. They are the two weeks when Turkish families drive, so coastal roads, ferries and campsites fill up and prices rise. Check the dates for your travel year before you plan a coastal route.

Common questions about Turkey by campervan

Does a European green card cover Turkey?

Only if the TR box on the certificate has not been crossed out. Turkey is a member of the Green Card system and has been since 1 January 1964, but each insurer decides which countries its certificate covers. The Turkish Motor Vehicle Bureau states that a crossed out TR box means the policy is not valid in Turkey. Check your own certificate before you set off, and if TR is crossed out, ask your insurer to extend the cover or buy a Turkish policy. The Ministry of Trade says a policy valid in Turkey must be produced at the customs gate, and that one can be issued near the customs office if you do not have one.

How long can I keep my campervan in Turkey?

Not longer than you are allowed to stay yourself. The Ministry of Trade states that for foreign nationals the period given to the vehicle cannot exceed the person's permitted stay in Turkey, and that people without a Turkish residence permit are given 90 days in any 180 day period. The longer 730 day allowance applies to Turkish citizens, dual nationals and blue card holders resident abroad, not to ordinary visitors. The vehicle is recorded against you on entry and has to leave with you.

What happens if my vehicle overstays in Turkey?

The Ministry of Trade publishes the penalties. For 2026 they are 2,988 lira for up to one month over, 5,976 lira for up to two months and 8,964 lira for up to three. Beyond three months the penalty becomes a quarter of the vehicle's customs duties under the customs law. Leaving Turkey without the vehicle and without telling customs carries an 11,952 lira fine for 2026. You can check the permitted period online through the foreign-plated vehicle service.

Do I need an HGS sticker to drive in Turkey?

Yes, if you use any tolled motorway or bridge. The roads authority states that foreign-plated vehicles must be HGS subscribers and must hold enough balance to cover the toll. You open an account at a PTT branch, including at the customs gates, or at a bank. If you pass a barrier without one you have 15 days to put it right, and after that the customs gate will not let the vehicle leave Turkey until the tolls and fines are paid.
