Food and shops
At 49.5 on Eurostat's 2024 restaurants and hotels index, eating out here costs less than half the EU average, and less than in Albania, Bosnia or Montenegro. Shop food is at 73.4 on the same measure, so the gap between cooking and eating out is wider here than anywhere else in this batch, and it points the same way it does in Albania: let somebody else cook.

Where to shop
- Best value: KAM.
- Full range: Vero, Tinex or Ramstore.
- Camper access: Large Vero and Ramstore branches in retail parks offer the easiest access.
What eating out costs, reported
- Cheap restaurant meal
- 400 denars
- Draught beer, 0.5 l
- 120 denars
About 6.51 euros at 61.47 denars to the euro, the rate for September 2026. Reported range 220 to 600, Numbeo September 2026
About 1.95 euros at the same rate. Reported range 76.84 to 180, Numbeo September 2026
Stocking the campervan
- Tinex, Vero, Stokomak and Ramstore are the supermarket names, mostly in Skopje and the bigger towns.
- The morning market is where the produce is, and it is cash.
Eating out without getting it wrong
- Eating out is half EU prices. It is the single best value line in the budget.
- Tavče gravče takes a while because it is baked to order. Order it early in the meal.
The arithmetic to keep in your head: on Eurostat's 2024 price level indices, Macedonian restaurants and hotels are at 49.5 against an EU average of 100 and shop food is at 73.4. Both are the lowest of the four western Balkan countries in this series. If there is one country here where a restaurant meal is cheaper than the effort of cooking, this is it.
