Safety and health
Serbia is a straightforward country to travel through and the main hazard is the driving. Road standards vary sharply once you leave the motorway, rural surfaces suffer after bad weather, and UK government advice singles out the Ibarska magistrala, the road from Belgrade through Čačak and Užice towards Montenegro, as particularly dangerous. Roadside assistance is 1987.

What works
- Do not sleep at motorway service stations. They are named as a theft spot.
- Arrive before dark so you can see the place you picked.
Health and pharmacies
- 112 is the general emergency number. An ambulance is 194.
- An apoteka is the pharmacy and is where to go first for anything minor.
Hire companies in Serbia commonly forbid taking their vehicles into Kosovo, Albania or Bulgaria. If you are driving your own van and planning to continue into Kosovo, read the entry rules before you go: the order in which you cross matters, and getting it wrong can leave you unable to come back into Serbia.
