Choose the region for the season. Southern Spain works best from autumn to spring. Inland heat can make an unshaded van uncomfortable in July and August. The Atlantic north is cooler and greener in summer, while the central plateau has cold winter nights and very hot summer afternoons.
Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons for a cross-country trip. The Mediterranean coast is mild but can receive intense autumn rain, and mountain weather changes quickly. Check AEMET warnings before exposed routes, flood-prone coastal stops or high passes. The Canary Islands stay mild year-round, but altitude and wind create large local differences.
