Sweden by campervan
Allemansrätten, the right of public access, is named in the Swedish constitution and it is a right to be in nature on foot. It is not a right to park or sleep a motorhome in the landscape. Driving off the road into terrain is banned across the whole country, a landowner cannot wave that ban away, and everything about where your vehicle stands is ordinary parking law. Everything else before the border: kronor rather than euros, a country that has nearly stopped using cash, congestion charges that find a foreign plate on their own, and one short season that decides the trip.

Basics
Sweden is the easiest country in Europe to arrive in and one of the hardest to arrive in unprepared. English is spoken almost everywhere, shops open seven days a week, the water from any tap is good, and sockets are 230V type F, the same round two-pin plug as Germany and France. What catches people is the money and the season, not the language.

The Swedish year
- July is the holiday month. Swedes take long summer leave together, so the coast, the archipelagos and the mountain roads are at their busiest and many small shops and workshops close outright.
- Midsummer stops the country. Midsummer Day is the Saturday falling between 20 and 26 June, which is 20 June in 2026, and Midsummer Eve the Friday before is the day everything shuts.
Power, water and getting online
- 230V, 50Hz, type F sockets. The same round two-pin plug as most of the continent. UK and Irish plugs need an adapter.
- Tap water is safe everywhere and is some of the best in Europe. Ask for kranvatten and it is free.
The Public Holidays Act fixes rules rather than dates: Midsummer Day is the Saturday falling 20 to 26 June, All Saints' Day the Saturday falling 31 October to 6 November, and Ascension the sixth Thursday after Easter Sunday. The 2026 dates above follow from those rules. Shops themselves are not closed by any national law, so a supermarket may well be open when an office is not.
Common questions about Sweden by campervan
Does allemansrätten let you park a campervan anywhere in Sweden?
No. Allemansratten is a right to be in nature on foot. The Instrument of Government, the Swedish constitution, says everyone shall have access to nature according to allemansratten, but it does not define the right. The Off-Road Driving Act bans driving a motor vehicle in terrain on bare ground across the whole country, and Naturvardsverket, the environment agency, states that parking or standing a motorhome, caravan or roof-tented car in nature is not part of allemansratten. Where your vehicle stands is governed by parking law and by the sign, not by the right of public access.
Can a Swedish landowner give you permission to park in a field or a forest?
No, and this is the part most guides get wrong. Naturvardsverket states that the Off-Road Driving Act applies to everyone including the landowner, so a landowner cannot give anyone else permission to drive or park in terrain. Permission from a landowner settles the question on a road, a yard or a made surface. It cannot make driving off the road into forest, a beach, a pasture, a park or a lawn lawful.
What is the 24 hour rule in Sweden?
The Traffic Ordinance caps parking at 24 consecutive hours on weekdays, excluding the weekday before a Sunday or a public holiday, on a public place inside a built-up area where the municipality is the authority for public places, and inside the road area of a public road. Naturvardsverket applies the same 24 hours to staying overnight at a rest area on a weekday, with a stay over a weekend allowed until the next working day unless a sign says otherwise. Local signs, fees, time discs and municipal traffic regulations override the default.
Do foreign vehicles pay the Stockholm and Gothenburg congestion charges?
Yes, automatically. Transportstyrelsen states that the congestion tax applies to vehicles registered in and outside Sweden. Cameras read the number plate, there is nowhere to stop and pay, and a notification partner identifies foreign owners, invoices them and takes payment through EPASS24. In 2026 a Stockholm inner-city passage cost 11 to 45 kronor in high season with a daily cap of 135 kronor, and a Gothenburg passage cost 9 to 22 kronor with a daily cap of 60 kronor. Paying late adds 500 kronor.
