Every motorway and expressway in Austria needs a vignette, and above 3.5 tonnes the vignette does not exist. Up to 3.5 tonnes technically permissible laden mass, a car or motorhome pays 9.60 euros for a day, 12.80 for ten days, 32.00 for two months or 106.80 for the year in 2026. Above 3.5 tonnes you are in the GO toll system instead: a GO-Box on the windscreen, charged by the kilometre. Heavy motorhome owners get caught by this every summer.

The 3.5 tonne line, and what it changes

  • No vignette above 3.5 tonnes. You need a GO-Box, available from over 175 sales points in Austria and abroad, and the toll is charged per kilometre by axle count and emission class.
  • ASFINAG's 2026 rates run from 0.0587 to 0.3274 euros per kilometre excluding VAT for a two axle vehicle, and more for three and four axles. A 25 percent premium applies on some sections, including the Tauern tunnel and the Brenner.

Winter, passes and the sign that closes a road

  • Winter tyres from 1 November to 15 April, required whenever the road is wintry: snow, slush or ice. It is a condition-based rule, not a calendar one.
  • Where there is a continuous layer of snow or ice, snow chains on at least two drive wheels are the alternative to winter tyres.

Tyrol closes its side roads to through traffic on busy days. From 1 May 2026, on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays plus 29 May and 2 October, motorway exits in the districts of Innsbruck, Innsbruck Land, Kufstein, Imst and Reutte are shut to transit traffic between 07:00 and 19:00. It applies to all motor vehicles passing through Tyrol, cars included, with local, origin and destination traffic exempt. Separately, the A12 Inntal between Kufstein and Unterperfuss and between Imst and Zams, and a section of the A13 Brenner, carry a permanent 100 km/h limit on air quality grounds, in force since 20 November 2014.
