Austria is one of the safer countries in Europe to travel through in a van. Violent crime against travellers is rare and the ordinary precautions are enough: nothing visible through the windows, doors locked in city traffic, and a preference for an occupied car park over an empty scenic layby. Break-ins happen at trailheads and lake car parks in season, as they do everywhere, and they are opportunistic.

Numbers to have in the phone
- 112 reaches every emergency service, in English if you need it.
- 144 is the ambulance number.
In the mountains
- Start early and be off the ridge by early afternoon. The summer thunderstorm pattern is reliable enough to plan around.
- Tell somebody the route, and remember that a side valley behind a ridge can have no signal at all.
