There is no motorway toll and no vignette for a car or a motorhome in Belgium. The motorway network is free and dense, and the only road charge you will meet is the Liefkenshoek tunnel under the Scheldt north of Antwerp. It sorts vehicles by total height alone, boundary three metres, and it names motorhomes as a likely category 2. That matters: category 2 paid 16 to 22 euros in 2025 by day and the category 1 price after 22:00.

Speed limits, and how they change at a regional border

Motorway, 3,500 to 7,500 kg90 km/h90 km/h90 km/h
Dual carriageway, physically separated120 km/h120 km/h120 km/h
Other roads outside built-up areas70 km/h90 km/h70 km/h

Brussels' nominal 120 km/h is a technicality: signs impose a lower limit on very nearly every road in the region, and the 30 km/h built-up default applies across all 19 communes. In Flanders a sign reading C43 with 90 on it lifts the 70 default on some road types, which is why the same kind of road can be signed differently two towns apart.

The three low emission zones in 2026, and what a foreign plate has to do

ZoneWhat 2026 allowsWhat a foreign plate must do
Brussels, all 19 communesEuro 5 diesel and Euro 2 petrol lost access on 1 January 2026, so a diesel needs Euro 6. The Ring (R0) and some named access roads to transit car parks are outside the zoneRegister, free, valid five years. Before you enter, or within five days of entering. Dutch plates are exempt
Antwerp, city centre and LinkeroeverEuro 5 diesel and better have free access. Euro 4 diesel enters after payment, Euro 3 and older needs a day pass. Petrol from Euro 2 up is freeRegister once, free. The registration covers every Flemish zone, Ghent included. Dutch plates are exempt
Ghent, inside the R40 ringThe same Flemish table as Antwerp. The Flemish Government decided on 28 November 2025 not to tighten it in 2026, and will review air quality in 2027The same Flemish registration. Ghent's own page says do it before you drive in

What the low emission zone fines run to

  • Brussels, foreign plate not registered€150
  • Antwerp, first offence€150
  • Ghent, any offence, once per day€185
  • Antwerp, second offence in 12 months€250
  • Brussels, non-compliant vehicle€350
  • Antwerp, third and further offences€350

Getting into a zone you are not clean enough for

  • Brussels day pass: 35 euros for a car or van, 20 for a motorcycle, 50 for a heavy goods vehicle. Maximum 24 per plate per calendar year. Valid the chosen day until 06:00 the next morning, and never refundable.
  • Ghent day pass: 45 euros whatever you drive, up to 12 a year, buyable up to four months ahead.

Tolls, fuel and the things that stop a big van

  • Liefkenshoek is decided by height and nothing else. Not axles, not weight, not length. Three metres is the line, and a roof box or a bike rack counts.
  • Fuel has a published legal maximum, set under a programme contract between the federal government and the sector. Diesel was capped at 2.4680 euros a litre from 16 September 2026. Stations may go below it and supermarket forecourts do.
