Areas of France
Choose a French region by season and vehicle access
France rewards regional planning. Match the season to the climate, then check city access, tolls and local overnight restrictions.

Brittany and Normandy
Brittany and Normandy: mild, windy and busy in summer
The northwest is comfortable in summer but exposed to wind and rain. Coastal parking restrictions become tighter in popular towns.
Best May to September
Plan for
- Check tide, storm and wind warnings
- Use signed aires near pressured coastal towns
- Expect height barriers at beach car parks
Useful bases
- Inland Brittany
- Normandy coast outside peak weekends
- Rail-connected stops outside larger towns

Atlantic southwest
Atlantic southwest: surf coast, heat and fire risk
The coast stays cooler than the interior, but summer demand, wildfire and dune restrictions require planned stops.
Best May to June and September
Plan for
- Follow forest and fire closures immediately
- Use designated coastal aires or campsites
- Avoid exposed stops during Atlantic storms
Useful bases
- Landes coast outside peak summer
- Bordeaux from outside the ZFE
- Charente coast

Dordogne and southwest
Dordogne and southwest: rural roads and summer heat
This region has many village and farm stops, but old centres can be narrow and inland summer heat is strong.
Best April to June and September to October
Plan for
- Park outside medieval centres
- Carry water during hot inland periods
- Check market-day parking restrictions
Useful bases
- Dordogne valley
- Lot
- Pyrenean foothills before high-pass season

Mediterranean south
Mediterranean south: best outside peak heat
Spring and autumn offer easier temperatures and less pressure. Summer brings heat, wildfire restrictions and crowded coastal roads.
Best March to June and September to November
Plan for
- Check Crit'Air rules before Marseille, Montpellier, Nice or other ZFEs
- Avoid dry vegetation and follow fire closures
- Reserve coastal nights in busy periods
Useful bases
- Provence outside July and August
- Camargue with weather checks
- Inland authorised stops

Alps and mountains
French mountains: a short access season
High routes depend on snow clearance, weather and vehicle dimensions. Treat an open pass as a current condition, not a seasonal guarantee.
Best June to September, subject to road status
Plan for
- Check each pass on the day of travel
- Carry required winter equipment in signed zones during the winter period
- Descend in a low gear and monitor brakes
Useful bases
- Lower valleys before committing uphill
- Authorised resort aires
- Alpine lakes outside peak weekends
