Northern Atlantic France works best from late spring to early autumn, while the Mediterranean south is easier in spring and autumn than in peak summer heat. The southwest can be very hot inland even when the coast stays cooler.

Mountain access has the shortest season. High Alpine and Pyrenean passes can remain closed into late spring and close again after early snow. Valley temperatures do not describe conditions at the pass. Check Météo-France warnings and the relevant road authority immediately before a high route.
