Safety and health
The main camper-specific risks are vehicle break-ins at busy visitor stops, severe heat or wildfire in the south, Atlantic storms and rapidly changing mountain conditions. Keep valuables out of sight, avoid isolated service-area corners for long unattended stops and follow official closures immediately.
Call 112 for an emergency. EU and EEA travellers should carry an EHIC for necessary state healthcare and travel insurance for exclusions such as repatriation or private care. In the mountains, give rescuers the route, direction, altitude and last known landmark rather than only a place name.
Protect the vehicle
- Keep passports, electronics and bags out of sight whenever you leave.
- Use occupied, well-lit stops and lock the cab at fuel or service stops.
- Do not leave the van on an exposed coast or flood-prone riverbank when warnings are active.
Emergency planning
- Call 112 for police, fire or ambulance help.
- Check Météo-France vigilance before mountain, coastal or heatwave travel.
- Carry an EHIC where eligible and separate travel insurance.
