Sleeping

Sleeping

A motorhome is subject to ordinary road-parking rules when it is parked on the public road. Sleeping inside does not by itself create a national parking offence. The vehicle must be legally placed, and any local order, time limit, height barrier or signed restriction still applies.

Outdoor occupation is different. Chairs, tables, awnings, supports and waste discharge can be treated as camping rather than parking. Camping and caravan installation are prohibited or restricted in specified protected, heritage and coastal settings, and municipalities may regulate parking for traffic, environmental or local safety reasons. Use a signed aire or campsite whenever the status is unclear.

Ordinary parking

  • The vehicle fits the bay and obeys signs, payment and time limits
  • Nothing is placed outside or extends into public space
  • No local, environmental or safety restriction prohibits the stop
  • Waste and water remain on board until a service point

Camping behaviour

  • Chairs, tables, mats or cooking equipment outside
  • Awning, stabilisers or other equipment deployed
  • Grey water or toilet waste discharged outside a marked facility
  • Occupation of protected land or a signed no-camping area

Aires

  • An aire de camping-car may be a simple parking area, a serviced stop or a privately operated site.
  • Read the displayed maximum stay, fee and service conditions.
  • Do not assume water is potable unless the tap is marked.

Local rules

  • Mayors can regulate vehicle parking through reasoned local orders.
  • Coastal, heritage and protected settings can have separate camping or access restrictions.
  • A height barrier or vehicle-category sign is enforceable even when another nearby car park is unrestricted.
