Sleeping

Sleeping

Greece prohibits camping outside an organised site, and the fine is 300 euros. The ban sits in the national tourism law, in the form an amendment gave it in January 2025. It bans pitching tents and parking caravans and motorhomes in archaeological sites, on the aigialos and the beach, at the edges of public forests and in public spaces generally.

Everything set up outside the van is the part that gets you moved on. On its wheels, nothing outside it, is the test

Still parked

  • Sleeping, cooking and eating inside the van
  • Roof vent and windows open
  • Blinds or curtains up
  • Parked where any vehicle may park, inside the marked bay, obeying the signs

Now camping

  • A chair, a table or a mat outside
  • Awning rolled out
  • A barbecue, a gas ring or a windbreak on the ground
  • Anything at all on the beach or the foreshore
  • Parked in a forest, a Natura 2000 site or an archaeological site

Where to sleep, and what each one is

OptionPriceWhat it is
Organised campsiteabout €31 to €35The only fully licensed option. Priced per adult plus per pitch plus electricity, so the bill is built from parts. Most close from November to March.
Street parkingfreeLegal where any vehicle may park, subject to signs. No time limit under 7.50 m inside built-up areas, 24 hours over it.
Municipal camper stopvariesThe traffic code lets councils and port authorities set up fenced, guarded areas for caravans and motorhomes. They are new and there are still very few.
Private land, with permissionvariesOne caravan per plot. Hosting a second one free of charge triggers the same prohibition and the same 300 euro fine.
Beach, foreshore, forest, archaeological sitenot legalNamed in the statute. This is where the ticket gets written, and the coast guard writes it.

Water, waste and showers

  • Greece has no aires network. There is no equivalent of the French or Italian service point grid. A few municipalities have set up informal stops, and campsites are the reliable option.
  • Campsites will often let you use the service point for a few euros without staying the night. Ask at reception rather than assuming.

Who decides, and who writes the ticket

  • Parliament sets the prohibition and the 300 euro fine, in the national tourism law as amended in January 2025.
  • The Road Traffic Code governs parking, and it is what makes a parked motorhome an ordinary vehicle. Hellenic Police headquarters issued clarifying orders to that effect in March and July 2026.

The three numbers Greek sources quote, and what each one is

  • Administrative fine, per person or tent or vehicle€300
  • The 1993 figure still quoted in older guidesabout €147
  • Criminal route, court fine plus up to 3 monthsup to €3,000

Enforcement varies far more than the law does. Greek sources describe heavy checks on the Cyclades and on Kassandra and Sithonia in Halkidiki in July and August, coast guard patrols on popular beaches through the summer, and much lighter attention in the mountains and out of season. A place that was tolerated for years is still prohibited, and tolerance is not a defence. These figures are what the statute and Greek sources report, and local signs and municipal decisions can be stricter.
