July and August are the worst months to be in a van in Greece, and they are when almost everyone comes. Athens averages a daily high of 34 °C in both, the ferries and the campsites are full, and enforcement on beaches is at its heaviest. May, June, September and October are better in every way: the sea is warm from June, the sites are open, the roads are empty and the heat is manageable.

The year by region: how it feels, how warm, how wet

The other summer variable is the meltemi, the dry north wind that blows down the Aegean mainly in July and August. It takes the edge off the heat on the Cyclades and it is also the reason high speed catamarans get cancelled. If a ferry matters to your plan in those two months, take the conventional ship and leave a spare day.
