Luxembourg is the most expensive country in the European Union to buy almost anything, and one of the cheapest to buy fuel. Eurostat's 2024 price level index puts household consumption here at 150.7 against an EU average of 100. Food in the shops is 125, restaurants and hotels 124. Transport is the outlier at 96, and fuel is why.

| What | Luxembourg | What that means on the road |
|---|---|---|
| Household consumption overall | 151 | The most expensive country in the EU |
| Food and non-alcoholic drink | 125 | The supermarket shop is a quarter above the European average |
| Restaurants and hotels | 124 | Eating out is where a budget goes here |
| Transport | 96 | Below the European average, and the fuel price is the reason |
| Alcoholic drinks | 103 | About average, which is unusual for this country |
The tank, not the restaurant, is where Luxembourg pays you back. Take the diesel gap over Germany at 0.303 euros a litre on 14 September 2026: on an 80 litre tank that is 24 euros in one stop, and the country is small enough that a detour to fill up is rarely more than half an hour. Whether it is worth it depends entirely on how much you are buying.
