Romania uses the leu and has not adopted the euro. The plural is lei, the code is RON, and one leu is a hundred bani. On 18 September 2026 the National Bank of Romania's reference rates were 5.2644 lei to the euro, 4.5839 to the US dollar and 6.1267 to the pound, which makes a 100 lei note about 19 euros. A price quoted in euros is converted at somebody else's rate.

Paying for things
- Cards are normal in towns. Supermarkets, fuel stations, chains and city restaurants all take contactless.
- Carry cash for markets, roadside producers, monasteries, small guesthouses and mountain huts.
What a trip can be priced on
- Rovinietă, category A, 30 days: 9.50 euro, billed as 49.95 lei by the CNAIR portal in September 2026.
- Danube bridge at Fetești: 19 lei one crossing for a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes, 38 lei for two.
A price board in euros is a warning sign rather than a convenience, and so is a cash machine that offers you a rate before it offers you the money. Neither is illegal. Both work precisely because you are expected to say no to them, and the answer is always to pay in lei.
