June to September is the reliable window, and how high you sleep matters more than which month it is. Switzerland packs a two kilometre vertical range into a small country. Lugano in Ticino sits at 273 metres and Samedan in the Engadin at 1,709, and their Julys are eight degrees apart. The same week can be shirt weather on the lake and frost at the top of the road above it.

BestWorkableToo hotCold or wetTop figure: average daily high. Below it: average rainfall for the month.

The strip shows the two extremes clearly. Sion is the driest row and Lugano the wettest, by close to three times over the year, and Lugano's wet months are spring and autumn rather than summer. The bands are our judgement about the region as a whole. The numbers are the published normals for the station named beside each row, which is why a mild coastal reading can sit next to a cold mountain band.
