Cook in the van. Statistics Norway put restaurants and accommodation at 139.7 against an EU average of 100 in 2025, and eating out every day is what turns an expensive country into an unaffordable one. The supermarkets you will see are Rema 1000, Kiwi, Coop Extra, Bunnpris, Meny and Joker. The first three are the discounters and the ones to plan around. Joker is the small one that turns up in a village, and often it is the only shop for an hour's drive.

Where to shop
- Best value: Rema 1000, Kiwi or Coop Extra.
- Full range: Meny.
- Camper access: Use edge-of-town Rema 1000, Kiwi or Coop stores with open surface parking.
Supermarkets, and what each one is for
| Chain | Good for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rema 1000 | The discounter with the widest reach. A narrow range, priced low. | Edge of town, easy to park a van |
| Kiwi | The other big discounter. Long opening hours by Norwegian standards. | Dense in the south and the east |
| Coop Extra and Coop Prix | Discount formats of the cooperative. Coop reaches into small places others do not. | The one you find in the north |
| Meny | The best fresh counters and the widest range. More expensive. | Towns and cities |
| Joker and Bunnpris | Small shops, higher prices, and frequently the only shop in a valley. | Some are under 100 m² and may open on a Sunday |
Buying alcohol without wasting a day
- Shops sell beer up to 4.7 percent and nothing else. Wine, spirits and strong beer are Vinmonopolet only.
- The shop clock is the law's clock. No alcohol sold after 20:00 on a weekday or 18:00 the day before a Sunday or holiday, and none at all on a Sunday, a public holiday, 1 May, 17 May or Christmas Eve. Municipalities may set shorter hours than that, not longer.
Stocking the campervan
- Stock up before the border and before the north. Prices climb the further you get from a town, and the gaps between shops in Finnmark and inner Nordland are long.
- Buy fish, prawns and shellfish here. Buy almost everything else before you arrive.
