Cards are widely accepted, but small cafés, markets, laundries and municipal service points may still need cash. Choose euros when a terminal or cash machine offers conversion into your home currency. Your own card provider may charge separately for withdrawals or foreign exchange.
Fuel, toll and campsite prices vary too much for a national snapshot to remain useful. Compare fuel before long rural legs, use the official toll map or simulator for the planned route, and check what a campsite or motorhome-area price includes. A free road may be a sensible alternative, but it can add time and bring narrower town sections.

Cash and cards
- Use a bank or Multibanco-branded cash machine and review any displayed fee before confirming.
- Avoid accepting conversion into your home currency. Let your card provider convert the euro amount.
- Keep modest cash reserves for village businesses, machines and small municipal facilities.
Trip costs
- Compare fuel away from motorway service areas and fill before long interior routes.
- Check toll charging and vehicle class before choosing the motorway.
- Confirm whether a night-stop rate includes electricity, water, waste disposal, showers and every occupant.
