Outside excluded land, an IMT-approved motorhome may stay overnight for up to 48 hours in the same municipality when no municipal rule says otherwise. Portuguese law defines the overnight period as occupation of the vehicle between 22:00 and 07:00. A local sign, longer authorised stay or stricter municipal regulation changes the default.

Overnight stays are prohibited outside expressly authorised places in Natura 2000 areas, protected areas and zones covered by coastal management plans. The rules also prohibit camping activity on the public road, dumping waste or water outside designated systems, and occupying public space beyond the vehicle's perimeter. Use a signed service area or campsite when the location or intended setup does not fit the parking rule.

The 48-hour default never overrides protected-area or municipal restrictions

Within the parking rule

  • The place permits that vehicle to park
  • No protected-area, coastal-plan or municipal prohibition applies
  • The vehicle stays within its own perimeter
  • Waste and water remain on board until a designated service point
  • The stay remains within 48 hours in that municipality unless longer is authorised

Use an authorised site

  • Chairs, tables, mats or cooking equipment are outside
  • An awning or other equipment extends beyond the vehicle
  • Grey water or toilet waste is discharged outside a service point
  • The place lies in excluded protected or managed coastal land
  • A local sign or regulation prohibits the stay

Choose a night stop

  • Check signs at the entrance and beside the bay, then identify whether the site lies inside protected or coastal-plan land.
  • A signed área de serviço para autocaravanas is the simplest option for water and waste handling.
  • Official tourism guidance describes service-area overnight zones with a typical 72-hour limit. The posted rule at the site controls.
  • Use a campsite for outdoor living, longer stays or guaranteed facilities.

Service the vehicle

  • Confirm which tap is potable before filling the fresh-water tank.
  • Empty grey water only over the marked drain and toilet cassettes only at the chemical-waste point.
  • Never treat a road drain, soil or beach car park as a disposal point.

Much of the Atlantic coast is protected or covered by a coastal management plan. A legal-looking parking bay is not automatically a legal overnight stop. Use an expressly authorised site whenever the status is unclear.
