Safety and health

Summer rural fire danger is the main country-specific planning risk. IPMA publishes a daily municipal map, and high danger can bring restrictions on outdoor cooking and access. Check it before forest or interior travel, follow closures immediately and keep the vehicle positioned for a quick exit rather than boxed into dry vegetation.

On the coast, respect cliff-risk signs and do not park or sit beneath an overhang or at an unstable edge. Theft from unattended vehicles is usually opportunistic. Keep valuables out of sight and choose an occupied, well-lit stop over an isolated roadside pull-off. Call 112 for emergencies. SNS 24 on 808 24 24 24 provides health triage for non-emergency illness.

Reduce avoidable risk

  • Check IPMA rural fire danger before inland or forest travel in warm, dry conditions.
  • Cook outdoors only where it is authorised and safe under the current fire restrictions.
  • Stay outside marked cliff-risk zones and never sleep beneath an eroded overhang.
  • Keep passports, electronics and bags out of sight whenever the vehicle is unattended.

Medical help

  • Call 112 for police, fire or ambulance help. Calls are free.
  • Call SNS 24 on 808 24 24 24 for clinical triage when the situation is not an emergency.
  • EU travellers should carry an EHIC for necessary public healthcare.
  • Carry travel insurance for private treatment, rescue and repatriation not covered by EHIC.
