Slovenia runs two calendars at once. The Julian Alps are a June to September country and snowbound either side, with the high passes shut. The coast and the lower Karst work from April to October and are mild enough in winter to be worth a trip when the mountains are closed. Because the country is small, the two are a two-hour drive apart, so a bad week in one is a good week in the other.

Rateče sits at 864 metres on a valley floor, so its row is the mildest reading the Julian Alps have to offer. Vršič at 1,611 metres and the plateaux above the valleys are several degrees colder and hold snow for months longer. Treat that row as the bottom of the mountains, not the mountains.
