Cards, cash and machines
- Cards work for almost everything in Riga and the larger towns, and contactless is normal.
- Keep some cash. Markets, small village shops and a few rural cafes still prefer it, and some set a card minimum.
Tipping
- Not expected. Service is in the price.
- Ten percent for a good restaurant meal is generous rather than standard, and cash is appreciated.
The Jurmala fee is a fee for the vehicle, not for the person, and it applies every day of the year. The barrier is on the road in, the plate is read, and a pass bought online before you arrive avoids the queue. It is the single most commonly missed cost in Latvia, because the city looks like an ordinary suburb of Riga and is not treated as one.
