The season is June to August, with late May and September on either side. That is when the beaches work, the forest tracks are dry, the campsites are open and the light lasts until nearly eleven. From November to March the days are short and grey, the temperature sits around freezing, and travelling means a heated van and an honest look at what that does to a water system.

Mosquitoes and ticks are the two summer nuisances and one of them matters medically. Mosquitoes are serious on the lake shores of Latgale and in the river valleys from June into August. Ticks are present across the country and Latvia is a known tick-borne encephalitis area, so check yourself after any walk in long grass or forest. The reward for waiting is September, when the first frosts clear the insects and the mushroom season starts in earnest.
