Lithuanian speed limits change with the season, which is unusual. The Road Traffic Rules allow a car or goods vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes 130 km/h on a motorway from April to October and 110 km/h from November to March, with 120 dropping to 110 on an expressway. Away from those it is 90 km/h on a surfaced road and 70 on anything else, and 50 km/h in built-up areas for everything.

Winter, and the dates that are fixed

  • Summer tyres are banned from 10 November to 31 March, on motor vehicles and trailers alike, under the Road Traffic Rules. Mopeds and motorcycles have their own narrower window.
  • Studded tyres are banned from 10 April to 31 October, and the ban can be pushed back by order of the Minister of Transport if winter runs long.

Parking and stopping

  • Stop and park on the right, as far right on the shoulder as possible, or at the edge of the carriageway where there is no shoulder.
  • The rule that matters at night: on an unlit road in darkness or poor visibility you may stop only with the hazard lights on, and you may stand only in a parking area or off the road.

Fines, Code of Administrative Offences

Speeding more than 50 km/h over416(6)€450 to €550, plus one to six months off the road

The alcohol limit depends on the vehicle, and a big motorhome is in the zero group. The Code of Administrative Offences treats 0.41 to 1.5 per mille as drink driving, at 800 to 1,100 euros and one year to eighteen months off the road, which makes 0.4 the general limit. But it sets a limit of anything above zero for drivers of vehicles whose maximum permissible mass exceeds 3.5 tonnes or which have more than nine seats, at 150 to 300 euros, and does the same for novice drivers at 230 to 300 euros. Over 3.5 tonnes, the answer is nothing at all.
