Safety and health

Poland is a comfortable country to travel by van. Violent crime against travellers is rare and towns feel safe at night. The ordinary precautions are the ordinary ones: arrive before dark so you can see the place you picked, leave nothing visible through the windows, and prefer an occupied car park in a town to an empty layby on a forest road.

What works

  • Do not sleep at motorway service areas if you have any alternative.
  • Arrive before dark, so you can see who else is there.

Numbers and pharmacies

  • 112 reaches every emergency service. The older numbers still work: 997 police, 998 fire brigade, 999 ambulance.
  • 601 100 300 is mountain rescue, GOPR and TOPR. 601 100 100 is water rescue.

Ticks are worth a sentence of planning rather than worry. Long trousers on forest walks, a look over yourself and any dog afterwards, and a tick remover in the van. If one has attached, pull it straight out with the tool rather than twisting, and watch the bite.
