If your vehicle and anything behind it weigh 3.5 tonnes or less, the state motorway network is free. The electronic toll system, e-TOLL, applies only to vehicles and combinations over 3.5 tonnes and to buses. From 21 September 2026 even a light vehicle towing a trailer stops paying. What still costs money is the three privately run concession stretches, which charge everybody at a barrier.

Low emission zones, and what a foreign plate has to do

  • Kraków started its strefa czystego transportu on 1 January 2026 and it covers about 60 percent of the city. Petrol and LPG need Euro 4 or a build year of 2005 or later. Diesel up to 3.5 t needs Euro 6 or 2014 or later, which is the strict one.
  • A foreign-registered vehicle must be entered in the Kraków system even if it meets the standard, with a copy of the registration document, the make, model, year and emission class. The cameras read plates against that database.

Fuel

  • Diesel ran about 8.75 to 8.89 zł a litre in the week of 14 September 2026, petrol 95 about 7.95 to 7.99.
  • Orlen is the national chain and is everywhere. Supermarket and unbranded stations on the edge of town are cheaper than motorway ones.

Carry these or be fined

  • A warning triangle and a fire extinguisher, the extinguisher somewhere you can reach it. Both are required by the vehicle technical conditions regulation.
  • Lights on at all times. Dipped beams, or daytime running lights between dawn and dusk.
