Sleeping
Sleeping
Polish law has nothing to say about sleeping inside a vehicle that is legally parked. There is no national instruction on it, for or against. What the statutes regulate is biwakowanie, camping, and where vehicles may drive and stop. So the question is never whether you may sleep, it is whether the ground under your wheels allows a vehicle and whether anything you do there counts as camping.

Still parked
- Sleeping, cooking and eating inside
- Blinds up, roof vent open, nothing outside the vehicle
- On its wheels in a place where any vehicle may legally park
- Van left in a marked forest car park while you walk in
- A campsite, a farm or a designated motorhome parking place
Now camping, or now an offence
- A tent, an awning, chairs or a table outside
- A fire, anywhere a forest district has not designated a fire site
- Stabiliser legs down, or waste water emptied on the ground
- Driving or stopping on a forest road that is not signposted for it
- Any of this inside a national park or nature reserve outside a designated spot
- Driving on the beach or the dune strip on the Baltic coast
Zanocuj w lesie, and why it will not help your van
- Lasy Państwowe, the State Forests, has designated areas where you may legally sleep in the forest. They total about 643,000 hectares across Poland, from 250 hectares in Nadleśnictwo Żagań to 5,830 in Nadleśnictwo Świdwin.
- The rules are generous: up to nine people, up to two consecutive nights, nothing to book or notify. Above either limit you e-mail the forest district at least two working days ahead and wait for written confirmation.
Where to sleep, cheapest first
| Option | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Street or public car park | free | Legal wherever any vehicle may park, subject to signs, height barriers and time limits. Most nights happen here. |
| Paid town parking | varies | The strefa płatnego parkowania, marked by signs and a meter. Usually free overnight, on Sundays and on public holidays. |
| Motorway services | free | A MOP. Legal, well lit, and the worst option for security. |
| Campsite | from around 100 zł | One Kraków city site listed 100 zł for a camper plus 35 zł a person and 25 zł for electricity in September 2026. Rural sites cost less. |
| Agroturystyka | varies | A working farm that takes guests. Many will let a van stand for a small fee, and it is worth asking. |
What a fine can run to
The Baltic coast is a separate regime. The shore strip, the pas techniczny, may be used for anything other than shore maintenance only with the consent of the local maritime office, granted by decision. Lighting a fire on the beach and driving a motor vehicle there without that consent are offences under the Act on Maritime Areas, and maritime office staff can issue the fine themselves. Beaches and dunes are out, whatever the town allows behind them.
