Driving
From 1 November to 15 May, vehicles must be ready with special winter equipment across Andorra's road network. When the road is snowy or icy, chains or an equivalent device must be used unless the vehicle has qualifying winter or M+S tyres. Police may stop a vehicle that is unsafe for the conditions.
Follow the official snow phases and Mobilitat status. A yellow snow phase requires winter tyres or special equipment and limits speed to 60 km/h. Conditions can become stricter. Long descents also demand a low gear and conservative braking to avoid overheating.
Winter checklist
- Carry chains or an accepted equivalent that fits the driven wheels unless qualifying tyres cover the requirement.
- Practise fitting the equipment before the trip.
- Clear snow from lights, windows and the roof before moving.
- Do not continue past a closure or police control.
Mountain roads
- Use engine braking on descents and stop if brakes smell or fade.
- Let faster traffic pass only at a safe layby.
- Check height and turning space before entering village streets or parking structures.
