Snow, ice, avalanche control, steep gradients and sudden storms are the practical risks. Check official alerts before moving and leave room to turn or exit an overnight area. Never park where snow clearance, emergency access or falling snow from a roof could endanger the vehicle.

Call 112 for an emergency. Andorra is outside the EU, so do not assume an EHIC gives the same access as in France or Spain. Check healthcare entitlement and carry travel insurance that covers mountain rescue, winter sports and repatriation where relevant.

Before a mountain route

  • Check weather, road colour phase and closures.
  • Tell someone the route if leaving the road network.
  • Carry warm layers, water and enough charge for a delay.

At the night stop

  • Keep exhaust and ventilation openings clear of snow.
  • Ventilate combustion appliances and use a working carbon-monoxide alarm.
  • Keep an unobstructed exit route.
