Food and shops

Food and shops

Five chains cover the country and they all keep long hours. Maxima, Rimi, Selver, Coop and Prisma are the names you will see, with Lidl now in the market as well. The useful pattern for a van is the same as in Finland: the big out-of-town Prisma, Maxima XX or Selver has room to park and the full range, while the small Coop in a village is the only shop for the next half hour of driving. Coop is the one that reaches the islands and the small places.

Where to shop

  • Full range: Prisma or Selver.
  • Camper access: Prisma hypermarkets and large Maxima stores have the easiest parking.

ChainGood forNotes
MaximaThe widest reach in the country, from tiny X stores to the big XXX hypermarkets. The XX and XXX sites are easy to park a long vehicle at
RimiThe other big full-range chain. Hypermarkets on the edge of towns, small Rimi Express in centres.Reliable fresh counters
SelverEstonian-owned, strong on prepared food and a good deli counter.Mostly larger stores with car parks
CoopThe village shop, the island shop and the small-town shop.Often the only option for an hour in any direction
PrismaThe big Finnish-style hypermarket. Widest range, lowest prices in its group.Edge of town, straightforward parking

Buying alcohol without wasting an evening

  • 10:00 to 22:00, every day. The Alcohol Act sets the window for retail sale of alcoholic drinks and there is no exception for a supermarket.
  • Home delivery is blocked over the same hours, from 22:00 to 10:00.

Stocking the campervan

  • Fill up before the islands and the east. Saaremaa and Hiiumaa have real shops in the main towns and very little between them, and the eastern border country is thin.
  • Buy rye bread, smoked fish, curd and dairy here. They are the genuine value.
