The season is June to August, with late May and September on either side. That is when the roads are clear, the ferries run full timetables, the RMK sites are all in maintenance and the light lasts until nearly midnight. From late October to March the country is a winter destination rather than a campervan destination, and travelling then means a heated van and an honest look at what minus 20 does to a water system.

The year by region: how it feels, how warm, how wet

Two things bite in the Estonian summer and neither is the heat. Mosquitoes and midges are serious on the bogs, the lake shores and in the forest from June into August, so a screen door and repellent are not an eccentricity. Ticks are present across the country and known to carry tick-borne encephalitis, so check yourself after walking in long grass. The compensation is September, when the first frosts clear the insects and the forest turns.
